Warm weather persists well into the fall these days, which means that there is a great portion of the year where your camping trips might feel somewhat sweltering. This is especially true if you’re going into the Deep South, where humidity and high temperatures are the norm. Keeping cool in your RV can be a challenge sometimes if you don’t have air conditioning, as many older campers don’t.

So how do you beat the heat when you’re in your camper? Chesapeake RV Solutions is your Virginia RV dealer. Here are our best tips for keeping yourself cool while RV camping in warm weather.

Park Strategically

Just taking a little extra time to park your RV strategically can really help with the interior temperature. While you may not always have much control over where you park your RV within a campground, you can angle it so that the side with the door and the most windows faces away from the west, where the sun will be at its hottest in the afternoon. If there is shade available to park underneath, then do so! If your RV has an awning, extend it once you’re parked so that you have a little extra shade.

Ventilate

Using your RV’s vents and windows can really help to rid your camper interior of hot air that makes it stifling. Open up the windows on the side of your camper facing away from the sun and keep the windows shut on the hot side. Use box fans to provide air circulation and open up your RV vents to let all that heat rise up and out of your RV. Make sure that your vents have covers, though, so that rainwater and debris don’t find their way into your RV.

Cover Up Windows

Heat and light can get in your windows, warming up your camper interior. Use a reflective bubble film coating over your windows to deflect light and keep windows covered with curtains during the day. The more light you can block out, the better.

Cook Outside

One of the most problematic sources of heat in any camper is always going to be the kitchen. Your stove and oven can heat up your RV interior really fast, and all that hot air and steam can make things very unpleasant.

Instead of turning on the stove, why not take your cooking outdoors instead? After all, spending time in nature is what camping is all about and everyone loves delicious grilled food. Use a small camping grill or cook over your campfire. Indoors, you can prepare cold meals for breakfast and lunch instead of hot meals to save energy and reduce the amount of heat generated.

Make a Swamp Cooler

If your RV has no air conditioning unit and you can’t afford to install one, then try making a simple swamp cooler instead. Place an electric fan next to a bucket of ice that contains a little bit of water. As the ice melts and the water evaporates, the fan will blow this cool air around your RV’s interior, helping to reduce the heat just a little bit.
