Let’s face it: after years of wear and tear ye old RV cushions can taking a beating. After being slept on, sat on, jumped on, and spilled on chances are your RV’s dinette cushions are looking pretty ragged. So, what are your options to fixing this problem? Well, you could purchase a new RV and not have to worry about any DIY fixes. Of course that’s quite a bit of money and effort. You could hire someone to refurbish your cushion OR you could refurbish them. That’s right, with just a little elbow grease you can spiff up your RV’s interior, give it a customized appearance, and replace those old, worn cushions.
- 1/4″ Plywood sheet for backing (you will staple fabric to this)
- 5″ Foam (you can also reuse the old cushions after removing their fabric)
- Fabric of your choice (many large fabric stores offer 50% off coupons during monthly sales)
- Polyester batting
- Staple gun (with staples)
- Circular saw
- Scissors and a knife (to cut the foam if you are not reusing the old cushions)
You know how they say cut once, measure twice? Be sure to do that here.
The first thing you’ll want to do is cut your plywood to the proper cushion dimensions. Lay your foam over the plywood and then lay the batting over that so that is covers the top and side of the foam. After this you’ll want to layer the fabric over the layers of plywood, foam, and batting so that it stretches to the back of the plywood about 1 inch. You will staple this to secure it with staples being spaced about 3 inches apart. Once you complete the top of the cushion you no do the same to the bottom. After you complete the top and bottom of the cushion fold the sides in like a present being wrapped and staple to the back of the plywood.
The best thing about this “no sew” technique is that is can be successfully accomplished by anyone. Regardless of whether you sew or not you will appreciate how quick and easy this technique is. Additionally, because this is a very affordable way to refurbish cushions, you can easily switch out your decor to match various seasons, trends, and holidays.
